God Helps Us Believe (1 John 5:10)

God has given each of us the twin testimonies of his Word and his Spirit. He speaks to us through both. We hold one in our hands, and the other holds us from within our hearts. If we truly want to progress in the life of faith, we must neglect neither.

The Bible: The Only Source of Certain Truth (2 Peter 1:16 – 2:2)

You can believe the Bible not because it makes sense (though it usually does) but because God wrote it. And he bypassed the natural misunderstandings, biases, and agendas of its human authors because they didn’t write it of their own accord or by their own ability: “Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Written So That You Will Know (1 Tim. 3:14-15)

Opinions have at least three advantages over facts: [1] They are in endless supply.
[2] Everyone you know will give you theirs for free. [3] You can form your own with any combination of feelings, intuitions, rumors, or impressions.

The Danger of Self-Made Religion (Col. 2:8-10)

People have always developed religions – in every age, culture, and location. We’ve worshipped about everything and in about every way. Paul calls this “self-made religion” (Col. 2:23) …. “Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jews [Pharisees] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law […]

Greater Things?

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.“ (John 14:12, NIV) Let’s be honest – the Bible is often offensive.  I’m offended when I’m told not to do certain things […]

The Bible and Borders

[Note to readers: I wrote this article for the editorial page for the Denton Record Chronicle several months ago and they haven’t run it. Since our country is having this conversation, a biblical perspective needs also be considered.] With questions swirling about immigration and borders, what might we discover in the Bible relative to these […]

Understanding Postmodernism

Adults have always had difficulties relating to young people.  “Dad, you just don’t get it,” was a phrase often heard coming from my two brothers and me.  But now, it seems the divide is even greater.  It’s not just immaturity or youthful exuberance we old farts don’t get – there’s really a gap in understanding.  […]

A Window to the World

In his final words to the Ephesian elders, Paul makes several statements I would like to highlight: Acts 20:27 27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.  Acts 20:29-30 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the […]
