CloseOn the road, we will run into these two bumps. On the one hand, we are bound to run into problems great and small, emergencies terrifying and minor. We rise to the challenge, take things into our own hands and master the situation. We tell God: “I got this…I’ll handle this myself.” Then, like Jekyll and Hyde, down the road we find ourselves overwhelmed and panicked so we run to some kind of infantile religion that promises to solve all our problems for us so we don’t have to pray for trust or think…or choose. One minute we’re obnoxious know-it-alls, the next we’re whining babies. But there is another way. It is neither grandiose nor infantile. It is not “I can do it all” nor is it “there’s nothing I can do.” It is the way of quiet Christian humility.

The Bible begins with a journey. “By faith Abraham…set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tent…he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” (Hebrews 11:8–10, CSB) Abraham never found the place for which his heart longed and his soul yearned while he was alive. Life is a journey. Each oasis we find in the desert ultimately fails to satisfy. We live in tents…but the city we desire remains just out of reach. We’ll going to look at the Psalms in order to investigate what we need to reach that city.
John Lewis
Philippians 1:27-30, Philippians 2:1-111
