Freedom from Unforgiveness

Luke 17:1

Todd Bolt

“Things that cause people to sin are bound to come.”
Luke 17:1 [NIV]

The word “offense” in Greek “skandalon”
Means a trap; a movable stick with bait to catch animals.

“If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.  But it is you, a man like myself; my companion, my close friend, with whom I enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God…”
Ps. 55:12-13 [NIV]

Dangers of Un-forgiveness

  1. Separation from God
  2. Hinder our sins being forgiven
  3. Bondage/imprisonment
  4. Bitterness/Resentment

Principle 1: “Your salvation is unconditional, but your intimacy with God is very much conditional.”

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:30-32

Principle 2: “The primary way we grieve the Spirit of God is by holding bitterness.”

Principle 3: “Forgiveness brings a new freedom to us”

Principle 4: “Forgiveness is a Process

“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies!  Do good to those who hate you.  Bless those who curse you.  Pray for those who hurt you.”
Luke 6: 27-28 [NLT]
