Our Father

In the first message of our new series, Teach Us to Pray, we look at the moment the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Instead of a formula, He gave them access. Through Luke 11, we see that prayer is less about the right words and more about connection, persistence, and trust. Whether you're confident or uncertain in prayer, this message helps us all return to the simplicity of knowing and hearing God.

We say it at church, it’s printed on cards, and hung on walls but what really is the Lord’s Prayer all about? What is prayer teaching us that can help us know how to pray in greater and deeper ways? Let’s go beyond the cliches and understand what Jesus is teaching us. Many of us are still asking the same question that one of the disciples did- Teach Us To Pray?

Luke 11:1 (NKJV) "Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.'"

The disciple asked to be taught after seeing Jesus pray. The key element to His prayer was that it was relational with His Father. It was not merely something that was done out of pious activity but was a source of communication and encouragement from God in heaven. We need that type of prayer life, one that will encourage us to live as Christ in our world.

Through the “Teach Us To Pray” series we will be discovering the different nuances of the prayer in greater detail, seeking to demystify it, and make it not just another religious activity, but a way to commune with God in a real and powerful way. Through the messages we will learn about how the Lord’s prayer is more about posture and mindset when we go to prayer than the exact words being spoken; it’s about the attitude of the heart. It is our desire that during this series we all, as a body at New Life, will seek to develop deeper prayer lives that will forever change us all.

Over this six-week series we will find out about how the Lord’s prayer aligns us to God in heaven through looking at seven petitions and eight attributes of God found within the prayer. We will be focusing on the version of the Lord’s prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13 and we’ll reference Luke 11:1-4.
