“And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” (Genesis 9:12-13, NIV)
Several years ago a young man on hard times walked into a rehearsal room at church one hectic Sunday morning and left with a guitar under his arm. We discovered the instrument was missing the next day. After about 10 minutes of strenuous investigation, we found it at a local pawnshop…complete with a copy on file of the guy’s driver’s license.
It’s not nice when someone takes something that doesn’t belong to them.
I had to laugh as I was reminded of that this week. In Williamstown, Kentucky there is a life-sized replica of Noah’s Ark. The tourist attraction has taken to lighting the Ark at night with rainbow-colored lights, ala Genesis 9:12-13. Critics from the LGBT community were incensed that these Christians would “steal” the rainbow from them! The Orlando Weekly stated: “This is Ken Ham’s [the founder of the exhibit] sad attempt to take back the rainbow symbol from the LGBTQ community.” Wait, what?
With the “bathroom bill” in the news around here lately, I grow weary of all the talk about sexuality. I realize that there are lots of people in our country that aren’t Christians and don’t see things the way I do. I’m willing to let them do their thing…just keep me out of it. But when they keep taking what isn’t theirs, I get annoyed.
The rainbow was God’s first. So was gender (see Gen. 1:27). So was marriage (see Gen. 2:24). So was sex (see Gen. 2:25). So were families (see Gen. 1:28).
Thou shalt not steal.
P.S. We didn’t press charges against the young man who took the guitar. We forgave him and led him to the Lord. He was baptized soon after.
