Thinking about presidential politics, a phrase came to mind: the horns of a dilemma. Dilemma is a Greek word that means “two premises.” The Greek rhetorician Phaedrus pictured a dilemma as an angry, snorting, charging bull (hence the phrase).
Here are the options as the bull charges: Take the left horn, take the right horn, or go between the horns in an attempt to deny that there are really two choices in the matter.
Sounds awfully familiar today with the political choices in front of us: right, left, or try for a third option.
