“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:15–17)
In a sermon, Dr. James Allan Francis said: “Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress…I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.”
Over the last 2,000 years, cults, critics, and skeptics have given different explanations for the historical importance of Jesus. Some say Jesus was a religious fanatic who attracted other religious fanatics. Some say a fake or a political revolutionary. Others give him a bit more credit: Jesus was a prophet, a good teacher.
The common thread is that they make Jesus out to be less than he is: Jesus is first and foremost God. He stands at the head of history because he stands at the head of the universe he created! He is preeminent.
If we want to “reset” our relationship with Him, this is where we need to start. I hope you’ll join us Sunday and maybe you’ll see Jesus in a different light.
